Prof. Tak Mak Recognised for Outstanding Research Achievements at the Reception for Innovation and Technology Awards 2024

The Centre for Oncology and Immunology is proud to announce that its Co-Director, Prof. Tak Mak, has been recognised at the Reception for Innovation and Technology Awards 2024, organised by Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC). The event, “Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology Achievements Shine in International Arena”, celebrated the outstanding research and development achievements of Hong Kong’s leading innovators. The event was also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 27th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.


Prof. Tak Mak was recognised for receiving the 2023 William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumour Immunology. This award acknowledged Prof. Tak Mak’s revolutionary research throughout his scientific career, including his significant contribution to the field of immunology by being the first to identify and clone the gene encoding the T-cell receptor in 1984. This discovery has since laid the foundation for immunotherapies at the forefront of modern oncology treatment.


The reception brought together over 300 individuals representing academia, industry, and government officials who have brought glory to Hong Kong by showcasing the city’s I&T strengths. Chief Executive Mr. John Lee congratulated the award winners, emphasizing that their achievements showcased Hong Kong's R&D success and innovation prowess, while supporting the city's development as a global I&T hub under the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

His recognition at the I&T Awards reflects the dedication and expertise that he brings to our institution. Together, we strive to contribute not only to Hong Kong's growing reputation as an innovation and technology hub, but also to improving cancer patient care worldwide.
